Most of my experience with assumptions and constraints ended up being more like a CYA rather than helping determine direction and help make the creative process more effective.

I am keenly interested in how to better handle these two items in a way that helps the my projects more effectively add value. Can’t wait to read others’ comments.

One of the constraints we were given by the project sponsor was the limitation of online help/support by the web store. Since we operate globally, it made sense to all of us to offer 24/7 chat support. The constraint was – we do not have people to support this and despite the impact on the customers we were not offering any different support than we are today with email orders.
I challenged the sponsor because I believed that we could not be successful unless we stepped up our support. He won 🙂
So, we tried to find ways to work around this – email support, FAQs on site. It was most difficult having to go back to the stakedholders and communicate that one of their critical requirements was no longer under consideration at least for phase one. We certainly all understood the resourcing constraints.
