Good insight for me! I’ve been reading lots of article about BA. Its role and responsibilities. Actually, i was only appointed as a Project Leader to lead Software Implementation. However, it was misunderstanding/unclear requirements from the beginning (selected wrong solution) and failed to implement. The company wants to continue with their requirements with the same software which needs major changes/entire software and currently, I kinda have to collect the business needs from initial. I’m very new to this and I’m not sure how BA team should be. Also, kinda have to handle this by myself collecting accurate requirements by interviewing stakeholders/SMEs.

Hi Dawna,

Sounds like quite a team! And I love that you are consciously expanding on everyone’s strengths through project exposure. Why do your PMs want their “SME BA”. Is there a way you can serve their true need while also giving your staff the opportunity to be exposed to new areas?

I have a large staff of 20 BAs supporting a dinosaur mainframe system that is COBOL based…yep, you read that right. I have 6 seniors, 10 BAs, and 4 newbies with little experience. I find that my staff wants their own project, but some projects are so large they require a team. For some time while I was assessing strengths and building the capabilities of the team I assigned by area of ‘expertise/exposure’. Now I have the luxury of using SMEs and cross-training. My question: when you explain all of the pros while acknowledging the cons, how do you deal with PMs who ‘want their SME BA!’? I have almost reached the point where I tell them that assigning projects is my prerogative, alone…

I confronted a scenario that was similar to the one your BA team you described was in. The peer review you recommended here would have helped the situation if I read this your article earlier. Many thanks as always.

Best regards,
Anthony
